Historic Sayaji Baug Arboretum Receives Comprehensive ₹45 Crore Ecological Preservation Grant
Vadodara’s crown botanical garden to restore rare 19th-century tree species and install subterranean sensor-driven irrigation.

Spanning 113 acres in the heart of the city, the garden is renowned for housing over 98 species of heritage trees, including rare baobab specimens, mahogany groves, and endemic floral varieties gifted to Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III by royal botanists worldwide.
The comprehensive plan includes: - Non-invasive root aeration and sonic tomography to assess the structural health of century-old trees. - Subterranean drip-irrigation networks utilizing recycled treated tertiary water from the city's sewage treatment systems. - Complete ecological restoration of the adjacent Vishwamitri riverbank buffers to attract migratory waterfowl and indigenous bird species. - Modernized, low-emission pedestrian lighting that preserves natural nocturnal rhythms for local fauna.
"Sayaji Baug is not simply a recreational park; it is Vadodara's green lung and living botanical archive," remarked Bureau Chief Ananya Joshi during her visit to the conservatory grounds. "This project ensures that our children inherit the lush natural legacy created over a century ago."
